New Song : "The Love Of Jesus"
What if John Mayer met Dawes and they talked about their identity in Christ?
Two weeks from now I’ll be releasing my album “Headwaters”. It’s an intentional collection of songs, written almost as letters, for my daughters, inviting them into the story of their father’s journey of faith.
Today, one of my favorite songs on the project came out. It’s called The Love of Jesus.
I love it for two reason.
Partly because it’s the most fun one to play as a guitarist. To be honest, I am thrilled with how it turned out. We went for a “what if John Mayer sat in with Dawes” vibe. The band is just me and two of my oldest friends, Paul and Chris, on drums and bass. I played the sparse guitars and keys, and when there are less instruments like that everybody has more space to really create. It was so fun.
On a deeper level, I’ve been trying to write this song lyrically for many years. I’ve written worse versions a hundred times. If you’ve heard my music before, you’ve probably heard some of them.
It’s this idea of identity, and how most often we drag around with us all that we’re not, all the memories of our failures or embarrassments. Our ego and its aftermath.
But who we really are at our core is not what we’ve done or haven’t done - or what was done to us - it’s who we were created to be as an image bearer of God, and that we are loved by Jesus
To write this song I worked backwards. I took the worst things that I’ve thought about myself, the ways I beat myself up or what I’m most ashamed of. Then I used those as the face that looks into the mirror.
The chorus, however, gets to look back from the mirror with compassion, joy and freedom. Because we are loved by Jesus.
And then it plays a guitar solo.
I hope you love the song.
Stay safe this weekend. Stay dry.
Be kind to one another, and to yourself.
Thanks for listening!
I think this mirrors what a lot of people think about their identity right now, and hearing the reminder that you're loved regardless of it all is a soothing balm to the soul. As a person with auditory processing issues, can't wait for the whole album to come out so I can read the lyrics fully to appreciate the song even more fully. :)
Once again, thank you for giving us words for something I need badly both to say and hear.
