Almost exactly a year ago, a group of friends and I threw a party. I had called up my neighbor, Carl, who started a Martin Luther-themed brewery called “Black Abbey”, and he let us take the place over.
We moved a bunch of tables out of the way, loaded in our gear, and started running through the songs we’d spent the past two years writing. It was finally time to record them.
These were sacred songs, meant to be sung in Church, but also to stick with you throughout the rest of your week. Hopefully, even throughout your life. Songs that would anchor you to something deeper. Something greater. Something true.
This particular collection of songs, titled “Beloved”, was centered around songs of friendship. Friendship first with God, and then flowing outward, how our friendship with God influences how we love and care for those around us: our families, our neighbors, even our enemies.
This would be the first full-length Anchor Hymns album, and there was no better place to capture this than in a pub in the neighborhood. A place where we actually hang out with our friends.
The album is finally out today. I won’t lie. It’s a party. There are more guitar solos than usually happen in a worship album. It’s not always perfectly in tune. It feels alive and free, like we were having fun. Because we were!
It is very intentionally not a “Coldplay-worship” album. We wanted it to have soul. It’s B3 organ and a Wurlitzer electric piano. It’s an old red Fender ProSonic amp that I sold right after the show. It’s Sandra, Taylor, Dwan, Sarah, Ricky, Mitch, Chaunda, Jasmine, Melanie, Ricky, Travis, Brent, Mike, Paul, Seth, me and a room of people singing along having a great time. It’s fantastic musicians who are even better people, sharing unbelievable songs.
I hope you love this record. I hope you enjoy listening to it, and more than anything I hope you can use these songs in your own worship, at church, at home, in the car, wherever. It’s the beginning of a new season for us at Anchor Hymns and we’re very excited.
We’ll have the chord charts up soon at our website, but for today just take the record for a spin and have a great time. I hope these songs can help you believe and receive the love and friendship of Jesus in a new and more tangible way.
Thanks for listening!
